(One of the posts I wrote on my Swell 24.7 blog in my previous life as a gift store owner in the busy tourist town of Provincetown on Cape Cod; posts that are grouped here under the category What Else Is Swell?, and are generally about life in Provincetown, life as a retailer, our fabulous dog Jack who sat outside the store for well over a decade, and other random things that grabbed me at the time.)
There’s a lot of cool stuff in the world. There are lots of unique, creative, interesting things that people are doing.
And then there are the rare ones that simply take your breath away; that make you want to cry they are so incredible.
This piece, “Lost in My Life, Price Tags” by Rachel Perry Welty is one of those things for me.
Nick found it on the front cover of the June/July issue of Art New England magazine and knew I would love it. Look closely and you’ll see that the wallpaper and the woman’s dress are made from an image of an original collage created with price stickers. I think that the woman wearing the dress is the artist. She has used the image to create a sofa, shopping bags, wallpaper and even a vinyl wrap that covers a bus.
On her website she has links to the galleries that represent her where you can see pictures of all kinds of interesting work she does.
I had not seen Art New England magazine before but it is a really interesting bi-monthly that covers contemporary art and artists in New England. This issue (June/July 2010) has articles on summer art destinations including Provincetown. I was glad to see the Provincetown Art Association and Museum featured as well as so many art galleries. And there is an article covering the burgeoning Cuban art scene here at the end of the Cape, highlighting Galleria Cubana (one of our favorites) as well as Tom Johnson’s photographs taken on his recent visit to Cuba. This one on the right is of a three story building in Havana and is a great example of the architecture there. He will be having an exhibit of his Cuban photos to coincide with CubaCon, an event happening here in Provincetown June 10-13 that covers Cuban travel, culture and art. You can find his gallery in Whaler’s Wharf.
Check the magazine out; it’s on newsstands now and makes great reading, though it’s the cover that I like so much.
It’s truly breathtaking.
